Charles's Story

I was born in Kansas City on Christmas Day in 1968. My parents gave me the best childhood any kid could have had, but then they were taken from me when they were both killed in a car accident when I was 15 years old. I was on my own, and I had a very hard life after that. I didn’t know how to deal with my loss, but as I look back now, I can see God had a plan for me.

I joined the military and served my country for eight years. I became a hard drinker, and was basically wasting my life. I have two daughters, Cheyenne and Paige. They are my life, and if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here today.

I attended school at Columbia College for a couple years, hoping to become a police detective; however, after some of the things I experienced, I discovered that was not the right career for me. I lived in several different states after that, just trying to find out who I was supposed to be. At one point I went to prison and was looking at serving 25 years. But God had a better idea for my life.

I never thought that I would be in a homeless place, but the Lighthouse is my calling now. This is where God wants me to be, and I am now able to help others with their lives. I am on staff at the Lighthouse, and this has helped me a lot, and has made my walk with God so much stronger. I want to help others the way God has helped me.

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
